After the successful implementation of the project ‘Velika plaza without plastic’’ inside the initiative Beyond Plastic Med (BeMed), we are extending our cooperation with this initiative through the implementation of a new project called ‘Clean the Ulcinj coast of plastic’’ which aims to raise awareness of the general public as well as institutions about the sources and consequences of plastic pollution of the sea.
In collaboration with the sports-fishing association ‘’Neptun’’ from Ulcinj, we’ve already started implementing this project. Its main activities include organizing diving actions for emerging waste from the underwater part of the Ulcinj coast, where , with the help of volunteers, analysis of the type, quantity and sources of waste is done.
Four cleaning actions were envisioned through the project, which will be held in September 2021 in Ulcinj. Aside from the divers, our volunteers will be present to make notes about the type and quantity of waste, after it gets taken out of the water. This way, we will get an insight into which plastic objects most endanger our coast and sea, and accordingly make an analysis as well as give a proposal for a solution to this problem. This issue concerns the citizens of Ulcinj, but also all citizens of Montenegro as well as tourists and visitors to our coast, as plastic is one of the biggest polluters of the coast, sea and ocean.
The results of the analysis will be presented to the public as well as to the representatives of the municipality of Ulcinj, along with the proposal to ban the use of the most common disposable plastic products.
In the next phase of the project, scheduled for 2022, information boards will be made, based on all of the gathered information from the first phase, and placed on three different locations in the municipality of Ulcinj. We will also organize three informative days during which we will talk about plastic as one the big polluters of the environment and provide an opportunity for local residents as well as tourists to learn more about its harmful effects.
‘’Lets clean the Ulcinj coast of plastic’’ has been implemented since May 2021 and will last for 16 months. The activities are supported by the Prince Albert II Foundation of Monaco within the Beyond Plastic Med (BeMed) initiative. The goal of the project is to educate the local population and raise awareness about the negative impact of marine waste.
